Take Off Your Watch to Unwind
Dogs don’t tell the time by clocks. They are more in harmony in nature. They know what time it is by how they feel and the routine things around them. They know when it is time to go out, time to eat or time to sleep by how they feel. Their instincts tell them to follow their own internal clocks attuned to their own rhythms. They sleep when they are tired, drink when they are thirsty and ask to be fed when their internal clock tells them it is dinner time. They go with the flow for the rest of the time. They are happy to drop everything and go for a walk at any time of day. Dog time means living in the moment and enjoying whatever it brings.
Obviously humans can’t live by dog-time all of the time, but at weekends or on vacation dogs make great role models for living in the moment and unwinding. Try taking off your watch, turning the clock to the wall and living by what your internal clock tells you. Sleep until you wake, eat when you are hungry and go for a walk if you feel like it. Dog time tunes you back into your own internal rhythms and helps you relax.
Coaching
We get stressed out when we are continually watching the clock, trying to be on time, and living our lives to artificial tick of the clock. Time is created by man. The slave-driving second hand does help us create a linear framework to our working lives and get things done, but it also controls us. Whenever you get the chance free yourself from its tyranny by taking off your watch and living by dog time. Do whatever you feel like, when you feel like it. Being on time doesn’t relax you, but living on dog time does!
Coaching Question
When did you last spend a day without your watch?
Daily Action
Try living on dog time for a while today, even if it is just for a little while. Do something when you feel like it, even if it isn’t the ‘right’ time for it.
